Gordon N. Ray, a graduate of Indiana University, was closely associated with the life and work of William Makepeace Thackeray. His four volume edition of the Letters and private papers appeared in 1945-1946 and his two volume biography in 1954-1955. From 1963 to 1985 Ray was president of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. The English draftsman, illustrator and art historian George Scharf was the son of the homonymous German-born artist settled in London in 1816. In 1840 and 1843 he travelled as official artist with a government expedition to Asia Minor. In 1857 Scharf became art secretary for the Manchester Art Treasures exhibition, and was appointed secretary to the newly founded National Portrait Gallery, becoming its director in 1882.
